Under the Health and Safety Commission Approved Code of Practice L8 it is a legal requirement for all employers and those with responsibility for commercial premises to set up systems for the control of legionella bacteria in water systems.  Wardgroup can assist clients to do this to any desired level.

Stank Villa

As part of a new tower extension on the Historical building, we were requested by the architect to provide a copper gutter and rainwater system with a matching feature finial to match on the top of the slates. Copper guttering is a unique product and is normally fitted with a view to it weathering and getting a verdigris film, making it look old very quickly. The effect, after just a few months can be stunning.

We sourced a supplier, and provided the necessary templates for offsets and roof pitch for fabrication. The system was erected and the copper finial fitted on the apex to the delight of the client.

Although the copper system is expensive, the benefits are the stunning effect it provides adding to the aesthetics of period, listed and historic buildings.

Sedgefield Road

We were requested to survey a bathroom in a bungalow on Sedgefield Road, Barrow in Furness with a view to suggesting a suitable bathroom adaption for the occupant who was having a total hip replacement.Having discussed the needs and the customers limitations we suggested a level access shower base with sliding doors from Impey UK. The benefit of this style of shower base is that it is designed to cover the footprint of the bath that is to be removed, thus making the associated tiling and making good much tidier and easier.

The works were completed with minimal disruption whilst the householder was in hospital.

Majestic Hotel, Barrow in Furness

The Majestic Hotel has recently been taken over by new owners who are investing money into bringing the hotel back to its former glory. The owner of the building contacted Wardgroup for advice on the suitability of the heating system and in particular the plant room where the boilers were fitted.

On surveying,  we found  one of the worst installations we had encountered in many years. The general quality of the installation and workmanship were extremely poor but of more concern were the many serious safety issues which were an immediate threat to life and property.

Our recommendation was to refurbish the plant room and change the system to a sealed system with expansion vessel and upgrade the controls on the system to directly compensate the heating in relation to outside temperature.

Our preferred supplier was Vaillant Commercial who provided input for specification and controls. We chose a cascade of 4 wall mounted fan assisted  commercial modules, one of which was specifically for heating the hot water which ensured no interruption of hot water provision during future downtime on the heating system due to radiator replacement work. The advantage of using Vaillant being that the cascade of boilers and controls are all compatible with each other.

The system was flushed and dirt separators were installed to protect the new boilers.

BNFL, Barrow in Furness

Working as a sub contractor for Agrilek Ltd we were commissioned to install a new central heating system into the office block and accommodation area.

The system was a wet radiator system utilising two Vaillant Liquid Petroleum Gas boilers and a low loss header. One of the boilers was an instantaneous fired hot water combination type, on specific request of the client, which permitted the removal of stored water and any potential Legionella risk.
The copper pipework distributing to 25 radiators was to be installed in an enclosed ceiling void so several new hatches were formed in various areas to accommodate access.

Radiators were also installed in a gatehouse remote from the building. Pipework ran in a specially formed floor duct with specialist insulation applied.

Controls allowed various zones to be operated independently of each other.
The installation was completed successfully to a very high standard, and a fully operational system was delivered within programme to the delight of the main Contractor and Client.
